GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Child Development Worker ensures proper supervision of children, encouraging their growth and meeting their developmental needs.  The incumbent is involved in the organization and implementation of a variety of learning activities for children. They monitor and provide the safety of the children while in the day care setting.

                         

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • The Child Development Worker reports to the Day Care Lead

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

 

  • Positions which report to the Child Development Worker include:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

           

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Family and Community Support Services Operations Manual and Alberta Day Care Licensing Standards.
  • Ensures child/staff ratios established by the Alberta Family and Social Services Day Care Licensing Policy Manual are maintained at all times.
  • Schedules daily programs, activities and learning centres designed to meet the developmental needs of the children, and encourage and improve physical, mental and social skills, including activities to encourage an awareness and understanding of Native culture and the Blackfoot language.
  • Supervision of children, individual and/or in groups.  Supervises their various activities throughout the day including structured activities, free-play time, lunch and snack times, and nap time
  • Ensures children are clean, healthy and properly cared for during their time at the day care by sharing in necessary health responsibilities such as changing diapers and helping children wash their hands and face.
  • Greet parents at arrival and departure on a daily basis.
  • Shares views in the preparation of weekly menu consisting of two daily snacks and lunch according to the Canada Food Guide.
  • Submits a report for inclusion in Day Care Program monthly newsletter.
  • Wait at the bus stop for the kindergarten and head start children in order to ensure their safe arrival and departure to and from the day care centre.
  • Supervises children in and out door play, meal and nap times ensuring a safe environment.
  • Staff focuses on children and not on other tasks or interests.
  • Staff is located at different points in the indoor and outdoor environment in order that children can be effectively supervised.
  • Writes daily progress reports of children for parents.
  • Submits timesheet to Manager, and Monthly News Letters
  • Shares in general cleaning and maintenance duties with other child care workers to ensure that day care and yard are clean, orderly and well maintained.
  • Attends monthly staff and parent meetings.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must have a high level of skills and interest in working with young children individually and in groups.
  • Must be innovative, creative, and imaginative.
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Must possess good organizational skills.
  • Must be reliable and consistent.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be in good health and able to lift babies and children weighing up to 25 kg.
  • Must be able to work with people as a part of a team.
  • Must be able to deal diplomatically and professionally with staff and general public
  • Must be patient, understanding and possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Should possess a good understanding of Native culture and issues.
  • Should be able to communicate in Blackfoot.
  • Must be able to attend Staff Development Workshops or Trainings.
  • Must be knowledgeable with Alberta Child Care Regulations.

Qualifications

  

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Must have a Child Development Worker Assistant (Level 1) with a minimum of one year related work experience.
  • Must possess a valid standard First Aid Certificate and training in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Child and Infant CPR.
  • Must have Criminal Record Check with a Venerable Sector Search.
  • Must have SYME Check
