ON- CALL WORKERS NEEDED:

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Livestock Control Officer is generally responsible for responding to complaints regarding livestock at large on the Blood Reserve, investigating complaints, impounding stray livestock and maintaining impounded livestock at the impound facility.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • The Livestock Control Officer reports directly to the Agriculture Services Manager.

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

 

  • Positions which generally report to the Livestock Control Officer include:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Land Management Department Policy Manual. 

 

  • To provide for the control of stray animals on the Blood Indian Reserve No. 148 & 148A and agree to the appointment of Pound Keeper.

 

  • Responsible for receiving stray livestock complaints and responds appropriately.

 

  • Upon verification of livestock and owner, the Livestock Control Officer will notify and inform the owner that the stock need to be herded or transported to an appropriate fenced area or stock will be impounded.  If stock is endangering public, the Livestock Control Officer will attempt to remove stock.

 

  • Will determine appropriate livestock to be impounded.

 

  • Recommends and requisitions payments for feed, minerals and facility repairs and materials.

 

  • Ensures proper maintenance of Livestock Impound Facility vehicles and equipment as required on a monthly basis.

 

  • The Livestock Control Officer will use discretion and judgement in removing and impounding livestock to ensure own safety is not threatened or compromised.

 

  • The Livestock Control Officer will impound appropriate livestock pursuant to Blood Tribe By-Law #6 (Impound By-Law) by issuing a Notice of Impoundment containing at least the following:
    • A description of the livestock
    • The date of impoundment
    • A description of the place where the livestock was captured
    • A statement of the Pound Keeper impounding the livestock
    • Transport or arrange for transport of the livestock to the Impound Facility
    • If the Livestock Control Officer knows or is able to determine the owner or the last person in possession of the livestock; notify one or both of them of the impoundment of the livestock
    • Rounds up stray livestock, pens the animals, feeds and provides water and proper care while impounded.
    • Monitors the area for stray livestock throughout the year when the livestock permits have expired and removes and/or impounds animals as required.
    • Provides report of livestock activities to Agriculture Services Manager
    • Performs other maintenance duties around Impound Facility

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must be able to recognize sick, diseased or injured livestock.

 

  • Must be able to deal diplomatically and professionally with the public.

 

  • Must possess excellent verbal and technical writing communication skills.

 

  • Must possess excellent observation skills, physical fitness and endurance required for field work.

 

  • Must be able to work carefully and be fully aware of safety risks to personal self and others.

 

  • Must be a team player and able to work as part of a team.

 

  • Must carry out duties and responsibilities promptly and courteously and maintain professionalism at all times.

 

  • Must be highly motivated with excellent initiative and an ability to work independently.

 

  • The ability to speak blackfoot would be considered an asset.

 

  • Must be able to ride a horse.

 

 

 

 


Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Courses in a related animal science field and three years related work experience with livestock. An equivalent combination of experience and training maybe considered

 

  • Must have a valid drivers license and a reliable mode of transportation.

 

  • Must provide a current drivers Abstract.
