Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Career Counsellor helps clients with short-term training needs and funding.  The Career Counsellor’s goal is to gear clients for success by advising them on possible career paths, training opportunities and funding sources. 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • The Career Counsellor reports directly to the Employment & Skills Training Centre Director.

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

 

  • Positions which generally report to the Career Counsellor include:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures Manual, and the Blood Tribe Employment & Skills Training Manual.

 

  • Works with clients to determine career goals, job readiness and training & education gaps.

 

  • Review client resumes and provide guidance as required.

 

  • Counsels clients on possible career paths and the training and education required to meet goals.

 

  • Provides referrals to other agencies or institutions that may be critical in meeting client goals.

 

  • Assists clients with the application process of different agencies and schools.

 

  • Maintains contact with surrounding agencies, institutions, and service providers to better assist clients in the resources available to them.

 

  • Screens clients for recommendation to the Employment & Skills Training Director for individual funding.

 

  • Ensures client files are complete before making a recommendation for funding approval to Employment & Skills Training Director.

 

  • Helps clients to develop action plans, including timelines in achieving education or employment goals.

 

  • Follows up with clients in programs to ensure progress by getting information on attendance, completion of programs, problems encountered, etc.

 

  • Determines corrective action on challenges encountered by clientele, which hinder progress toward goals.

 

  • Completes Employment Insurance verifications on all clients with CFT7.

 

  • Ensures all clients understand funding support received.

 

  • Meets with clients on an individual basis to ensure understanding of rules and regulations regarding funding received and ensures that the Trainee Contract is signed.

 

  • Monthly site visits with clients attending training in local areas including Cardston and Lethbridge.

 

  • Administers the Work Gear Program.

 

  • Maintains social media to promote programs and employment opportunities for the Blood Tribe members.

 

  • Facilitates/makes presentations on funding and career planning.

 

  • Maintains the T7 database, including ensuring database is ready for upload with no errors and being responsible for monthly, quarterly and annual database report.

 

  • Provides Director with quarterly client statistics, including number of clients counselled, client status and follow-up results.

 

  • Adheres to budget and report on expenditures and variances from established budget on a monthly basis.

 

  • Attends weekly staff meetings and update colleagues on initiatives.

 

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must be proficient in using Microsoft and Data Base computer software.

 

  • Must have basic math skills.

 

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and interviewing skills.

 

  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.

 

  • Must have excellent presentation skills.

 

  • Must be motivated and able to work independently.

 

  • Must have good understanding of the job search process.

 

  • Should possess a good understanding of Blackfoot culture and issues.

 

  • An ability to communicate in Blackfoot is an asset.

 


Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Must possess certification in Career Development and/or Career Counseling and three (3) years related experience.

 

  • A combination of relevant Education and Experience maybe considered.

 

  • Upon hiring must be willing to complete Career Development Practitioner

 

  • Must have a valid drivers license and a reliable mode of transportation
