GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

 

The Herd Maintenance Technicians oversees the daily care of the Kainai Iinnii Herd and general maintenance of Kainai Iinnii Rematriation Project facilities. Responsibilities include ensuring daily nutritional and water intake requirements of Iinnii herd are being met, and that holding pens, facilities, and equipment are properly maintained. Other responsibilities include assisting with monitoring, documenting, reporting, and implementing the Herd management activities based on the Kainai Iinnii Holistic Management Plan and in accordance with rules and regulations of the Blood Tribe. The incumbent will work with Blood Tribe departments and community, Waterton Lakes National Park, and others to maintain the Kainai Iinnii health and well-being and report results and recommendations to the Blood Tribe Land Management Department.

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • Reports to the Kainai Iinnii Coordinator.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Blood Tribe Administration Personnel Policies and Procedures and the Blood Tribe Land Management Department Operational Policy Manual.

 

  • Ensures that daily nutritional and water intake requirements of Iinnii Herd are being met.

 

  • Ensures that pens are clean and free of manure when Iinnii are contained at holding facility.

 

  • Monitors and maintains dugout water quality and water sources at Kainai Iinnii Herd pastures.

 

  • Monitors Iinnii body condition, health, and behavior.

 

  • Picks up and delivers project materials from suppliers to project site.

 

  • Maintains holding facility and ensures facility and equipment are in good working condition.

 

  • Assists with implementation of Kainai Iinnii Herd management activities.

 

  • Assists with conducting rangeland health assessments, fencing, and infrastructure management.

 

  • Collecting bison herd health data and updating a bison database on an ongoing basis in accordance with recommendations from the Management Plan.

 

  • Assists in mapping field data information.

 

  • Monitoring the effectiveness of implemented bison management strategies to ensure cultural targets and goals are being met.

 

  • Makes recommendations and coordinates preventative programs in order to ensure the sustainable development of bison herd.

 

  • Recommends operating conditions to negate or minimize damage to plant and wildlife communities or their habitat.

 

  • Prepares reports as required by the Kainai Iinnii Coordinator and the Lands Director in relation to the bison herd.

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must possess knowledge of livestock care, ethics, and principals.
  • Must have working knowledge of farm machinery operation and maintenance.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a team player and able to work as part of a team.
  • Must possess a moderate level of record keeping and reporting skills.
  • As a public servant, must be able to carry out duties and responsibilities promptly and courteously and maintain professionalism at all times. 
  • Must be highly motivated with excellent initiative and an ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of the Blackfoot culture and an ability to communicate in the Blackfoot language would be an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and a reliable mode of transportation.
  • Must be willing to endorse an oath of confidentiality.

 

 

 


Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

 

  • Courses or related training in the area of agriculture or animal science with 2-3 year’s work experience.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable mode of transportation.
