Job Description





The Recreation Program Coordinator provides and organizes recreational, leisure, cultural and educational opportunities for youth (aged 9 – 17) from the community through the provision of cultural and sporting activities at each of the halls on Blood Reserve.  The incumbent schedules, promotes, supervises and evaluates all cultural and sporting programs and activities to be held in the public facilities of the specific community on the Blood Reserve.  The incumbent also solicits funds from donors for the operation of recreational activities and develops an annual budget.




  • The Recreation Program Coordinator reports directly to the Recreation Director.


-           Works closely with the appropriate community recreation representatives.


-           Works closely with a team of Recreation Program Coordinators.




-                Volunteers when necessary   






  •  Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Recreation Department Operations Manual.
  • Plan and prepare weekly schedules of cultural and sporting activities such as dances, drumming instruction, floor hockey and basketball to be held in the community facilities.
  • Schedule special events such as dinners, and dances for the youth.
  • Pick up and drop off youth in the area so that they may be able to participate in activities.
  • Prepare budget for weekly activities, track expenditures and explain any variances.
  • Submit expense claims on a weekly basis.
  • Plan activities on a monthly and seasonal basis, preparing the coinciding budget.
  • Promote self-awareness and self-esteem amongst program participants through the activities and events planned.
  • Recruit Elders and other members of the community to participate in the educational/cultural component of the program.
  • Complete a weekly report, evaluating each day’s activities noting the participation, behaviour and methods which would improve the activity to be submitted monthly to the Recreation Director.
  • Supervise volunteers and all participants of scheduled and special programs and activities.
  • Prepare meals for the participants of the program if necessary and budgets for this in the weekly/monthly activity planning.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the other area Recreation Program Coordinators to discuss the programs and activities each area provides.
  • Meet with the appropriate community Recreation representatives monthly to discuss future activities and programs.
  • Maintain the general cleanliness of the area recreational facilities through the supervision of volunteers or by performing janitorial duties in the absence of other employees.
  • Purchase recreation activity equipment as approved by the Recreation Director.
  • Seek sponsors for recreation programs and awards for each as required.
  • Plan summer, day and overnight camps and activities in collaboration with students, elders, and fellow Coordinators.
  • Prepare and submit weekly reports to the Recreation Director.
  • Must be prepared to provide a updated criminal record check along with a Child Intervention Check
  • Prepare an annual budget for the recreation programs and activities for the appropriate community with the assistance of the Recreation Director.
  • Any other duties as assigned





  • Have good accounting skills.
  • Possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  •  Be highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Should have strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Be able to establish rapport with people of all ages and background.
  • Should be able to work with people as part of a team and as a supervisor.
  • Possess excellent public relation skills.
  • Have a good understanding of the rules and regulations of sports activities.
  • The ability to communicate in Blackfoot would be an asset




  • Must have a post-Secondary education in Recreation Studies or a related field, and 2-3 years progressive experience in a relevant setting
  • Evenings and weekends will be required in this position
  • Must possess a valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate. Training in sports medicine is an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License and a reliable mode of transportation
  • Must submit a Current Child Intervention Check Along with an updated Criminal Record Check
