Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Recreation Programs Supervisor is responsible for the planning and implementation of youth programs that provide recreational, leisure, cultural and educational opportunities for the youth (aged 5 – 17) of the Blood Tribe community through the provision of cultural and sporting activities at the various halls on Blood Reserve. The incumbent provides direction to Program Coordinators to ensure schedules, administration, promotion, supervision, and evaluation of cultural and youth programs align with Blood Tribe Recreation and Parks vision, mission, and values. The Program Supervisor will be responsible for a number of tasks that include leadership in the development of programs and activity’s, long-term strategic plans, financial strategies, identify potential funding sources to support youth programs, human resource strategies, and initiatives as identified by the Recreation Director. The Programs Supervisor must have the ability to function both independently and collaboratively in the areas of leadership, administration, supervision, evaluation, communication, and be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • The Recreation Programs supervisor reports directly to the Recreation Director.
  • Works closely with the appropriate community recreation representatives.

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

 

  • Positions which generally report to the Recreation Programs Supervisor include:
  • Recreation Program Coordinators (4)

 

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures and the Recreation Department Operations Manual.
  • Assist with negotiations for space and booking events to meet the expectations of the communities.
  • Coordinates the planning and preparation of weekly schedules of cultural and sporting activities such as dances, drumming instruction, floor hockey and basketball to be held in the community facilities.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of special events such as dinners, movie nights and dances for the youth.
  • Ensures the Program Coordinators pick up and drop off youth in the area so that they may be able to participate in activities.
  • Prepares budget for weekly activities for each community, keeps track of expenditures and explains any variances.
  • Conduct research, make site visits, and find resources to help staff make decisions about event possibilities.
  • Assist with managing on-site events and ensuring that clean-up is in place.
  • Submits expense claims for the Program Coordinators on a weekly basis.
  • Coordinates the planning of activities on a monthly and seasonal basis, preparing the coinciding budget.
  • Promotes self-awareness and self-esteem amongst program participants through the activities and events planned.
  • Recruits Elders and other members of the community to participate in the educational/cultural component of the program.
  • Completes a weekly report, evaluating each day’s activities noting the participation, behaviour and methods which would improve the activity to be submitted monthly to the Recreation Director.
  • Prepares budgets for weekly/monthly activity planning.
  • Attends weekly meetings with the Recreation Program Coordinators to discuss the programs and activities each area provides.
  • Meets with the appropriate community Recreation representatives monthly to discuss future activities and programs.
  • Purchases recreation activity equipment as approved by the Recreation Director.
  • Seeks donors to support recreation programs through donations for trophies or prizes.
  • Plans summer, day and overnight camps and activities as required, requesting input from students, Elders, and Recreation Program Coordinators.
  • Disciplines Recreation Program Coordinators with the advice of the Recreation Director and/or Human Resource Director.
  • Undertakes regular employee performance appraisal and evaluation programs for the Recreation Program Coordinators and informs both the Recreation Director and the Human Resource Director of the results.
  • Assists the Recreation Director and the Human Resource Director with the annual review and update of job descriptions for the Recreation Program Coordinators.
  • Prepares and submits weekly reports to the Recreation Director.
  • Prepares an annual budget for the recreation programs and activities for the appropriate community with the assistance of the Recreation Program Coordinators and Director.
  • Close out events as required.

 

NECESSRY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must have good accounting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading, and speaking
  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
  • Must have strong organizational and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers.
  • Must be able to work with people as part of a team and as a supervisor.
  • Must possess excellent public relations skills.
  • Should possess a good understanding of the rules and regulations of sports activities.
  • The ability to communicate in blackfoot would be an asset.

Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • The ideal candidate must have a Bachelor of Arts Degree specializing in Recreation Administration or related field with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a related leadership role and implementing special events and recreation planning.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, Evenings and Weekends
  • Must have a valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.
  • Must submit a current child intervention check and an updated criminal record check
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and reliable mode of transportation.
