Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Day Care Cook provides for the nutritional needs of the children (infant, pre-school and school-aged) attending the day care.  The incumbent plans, prepares and serves meals and snacks, and maintains a clean kitchen.  The Day Care Cook ensures that meals and snacks provided are in accordance with the Canada Food Guide.

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

 

  • The Day Care Cook reports directly to the Day Care Team Lead

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

 

  • Positions which generally report to the Day Care Cook include:
    • None

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Blood Tribe Administration Policies and Procedures, the Family and Community Support Services Operations Manual, Alberta Day Care Licensing Standards, and the Alberta Health Regulations Act.

 

  • Purchases groceries on a quarterly and 2-week time schedule adhering to the annual budget.

 

  • Plans and prepares a weekly menu of daily morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack, according to the Canada Food Guide.  Ensures lunch and snacks are prepared and served on time according to the meal schedule. 

 

  • Ensures that food is presented in an appealing nature combining different colours, textures, and shapes.

 

  • Posts the weekly menu at the front entrance and in kitchen area.

 

  • Posts an allergy list in the kitchen area and must be updated on a monthly basis.

 

  • Ensure weekly/monthly menu planning includes special occasions such as children’s birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, Valentine’s Day, staff theme planning, etc.

 

  • Ensures snacks and meals do not violate any dietary restrictions that the children may have, especially in case of allergies.

 

  • Cleans tables, gathers dishes, washes dishes, and sweeps the floor around the tables as required after meal and snack time in each of the playrooms.  Mop floor around the snack table only if food or drink has spilled onto the floor and has become soiled or sticky.

 

  • Ensures that the kitchen and equipment are clean and sanitized at all times, including stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, dishwasher (thorough wipe down).  All major appliances such as stove, fridge, freezer etc. are sanitized weekly.

 

  • Must do a monthly check for expired food items to be discarded.

 

  • Launders kitchen towels and cleaning cloths at the end of each day to ensure there is a supply for the next day.  Assist with Blankets and sheets when needed.  Ensure laundry soap and supplies are purchased and stocked.

 

  • Proper cooking attire (hair nets, gloves, apron).

 

  • Ensure that at least once a month culture meal/snack is served.  

 

  • Menus must be planned in advance and be ready the Friday before the week it is to be posted. Please keep menus in a filing system to be used for future reference and retain for a minimum of 2 years.

 

  • A daily check list must be filled out and initialled to ensure high use areas and appliances have been recorded and documented after sanitization and temperature check. that will include a schedule of cleaning/disinfecting high use areas and appliances and must include a record of the temperatures of each appliance.  The checklist should begin at the start of the shift to ensure the appliances are at the right temperatures and are working effectively and again in the P.M.   These checklists must be posted and visible in the kitchen area. 

 

  • A daily/weekly check list to record the temperatures of the meat that is being cooked.
  • Keeps an inventory list of all purchases made and submits a request to purchase goods when they run low or become empty.  Dish soap, bleach, dish towels, etc should be stocked at all times and be in good repair.  The requests may be submitted to the Day Care Manager to be processed.

 

  • Lunch will include a portion for all staff.  The staff will encourage and model to the children in their group to try the food groups.

 

  • May submit a recipe, or valuable information regarding food/Canada Food Guide to share with parents in the day care programs monthly newsletter.

 

  • Attends monthly staff meetings.

 

  • Helps with supervision/ratios of children when needed.

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Must be innovative, creative, and imaginative.

 

  • Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.

 

  • Must be able to budget and plan in advance.

 

  • Must have a genuine interest in cooking and baking for large groups.

 

  • Must possess good organizational and time management skills.

 

  • Must be able to work with people as a part of a team.

 

  • Must have good basic arithmetic and mathematics skills.

 

  • Must be in good health and be able to stand for long periods.

 

  • Must be willing to maintain a high standard of cleanliness.

 

  • Must have a keen sense of taste and smell.

 

  • Must be able to deal diplomatically and professionally with staff and parents.

 

  • Should possess a good understanding of Native culture and issues

 

  • Related experience in a Native organization is an asset.

 

  • A 50-hour orientation in Early Childhood Education certificate or level 1 would be considered an asset.

 

  • An ability to communicate in Blackfoot is an asset.

Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have completed a Food Safety and Sanitation Certificate with a minimum of one - year related work experience
  • Must possess a valid standard First Aid Certificate and training in Cardiopulmonary    resuscitation (CPR) and Child and Infant CPR
  • Must submit a current Criminal Record with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Welfare Check (SYME)
  • Must possess a valid class 5 driver's license and have access to a vehicle
