Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Invasive Plants Technician implements the Invasive Plant Management Program for the Blood Tribe Land Management Department – Environmental Protection Division. Responsibilities include implementation of chemical, biological and mechanical control monitoring of invasive plant species on the Blood Reserve.  Additional responsibilities include monitoring human and wildlife use in the main Blood Reserve and Timber Limits, documenting and analyzing with ArcGIS, coordinating and implementing an education and awareness program for the community.  This position is field-oriented and requires individuals to be outdoors most days. 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Environmental Protection Manager

 

AREA OF SUPERVISION:

  • Positions which generally report to the Invasive Plant Technicians include NONE

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all duties and responsibilities per Blood Tribe Administration Personnel Policies and Procedures and the Blood Tribe Land Management Department Operational Policy Manual.
  • Identifies the appropriate integrated invasive plant control techniques: Uses a variety of weed control techniques such as pulling weeds, spraying weeds, mowing and introducing insect species.   
  • Surveys and documents new invasive plant growth for priority management.
  • Maintains all equipment.
  • Monitors the main Blood Reserve and Timber Limit pertaining to human and wildlife activity.
  • Utilizes ArcGIS to accurately document and analyze data collected.
  • Develops and presents communication material for schools, departments, public and various interest groups to educate about invasive plant control on the Blood Reserve.
  • Assists in preparing reports as required by the Blood Tribe Land Management Department. 
  • Other related duties to assist with the Department goals and objectives.

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

  • Must possess knowledge of native plant communities on the Blood Reserve.
  • Must be able to identify invasive plant species.
  • Must possess good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must possess a high level of record keeping and reporting skills.
  • A working knowledge of current computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web browsers, GIS and GPS is required.
  • Must be highly motivated with excellent initiative and an ability to work independently.
  • Must be physically fit.
  • Knowledge of the Blackfoot culture and an ability to communicate in the Blackfoot language would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of WHMIS and its components are required.

Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Must possess an environmental sciences diploma or related courses and 3 years related experience
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable mode of transportation.
  • Must provide an updated Driver’s Abstract.
  • First Aid and CPT training would be considered an asset.
