Land Management - Environmental Protection Division

FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION:

The Environmental Technician assists with cultural and ecologicalfield assessments, monitoring, and reporting to implement holistic ecosystemmanagement projects on the Blood Reserve (#148 & #148A-Blood Timber Limit). The main objective of the Environmental Technician is to support and advocate sustainable use and stewardshipof Blood Tribe lands and resources. Responsibilities will includeenvironmental surveying and monitoring to gather Traditional Ecological Knowledge along with western scientific data on Blood Reserve lands and natural resources. The individual will be responsible for ensuring data collected will beaccurately entered into the BTLM database and assist with analysis. This data will inform stewardship and protection of ecologically and culturally important sites, including culturally significant species and species at risk. Technicians will assist in sharing this knowledge through community information sessions, citizen science, and other related BTLM communication platforms. This position involves collaborating with Blood Tribe elders, community members and tribal departments and entities as well as provincial, federal, and non-government agencies.

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to the Environmental Protection Manager

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Blood Tribe Administration Personnel Policies and Procedures and the Blood Tribe Land Management Department Operational Policy Manual.
  • Organizes and implements projects to gather information for proper management and monitoring of aquatic, terrestrialand culturally important ecosystems.
  • Identifies and inventories plant and wildlife communities and enters information into databases.
  • Estimates plant and wildlife populations for management programs.
  • Conducts preliminary data analysis and interpretation of field data.
  • Assists in mapping field data and relevant information.
  • Consults with community, stakeholders, and the public at large to explore wildlife and plant ecosystem management options.
  • Make recommendations and coordinates preventative programs to ensure the sustainable development and stewardship of environment and natural resources.
  • Recommends environmentally sustainable and safe operating conditions to negate or minimize damage to plant and wildlife communities or their habitat.
  • Provides public presentations and relevant information for schools, clubs, and various interest groups to educate about sustainable resource development and management.
  • Prepare reports as required by the Environmental Protection Manager and the Land Management Department in relation to the environment.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:

 

  • Knowledge of natural resources, ecosystem management or environmental studies.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a team player and able to work as part of a team.
  • Possess a high level of record keeping and reporting skills.
  • Be able to carry out duties and responsibilities promptly and courteously and always maintain professionalism. 
  • A working knowledge of current computer hardware and software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web browsers, GIS and GPS is required.
  • Highly motivated with excellent initiative and an ability to work independently.
  • Physically fit.
  • Knowledge of the Blackfoot culture, specifically Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and an ability to communicate in the Blackfoot language would be an asset.
  • Reliable transportation.

 


Qualifications

NECESSARY TRAINING AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Environmental Science diploma or completed course work towards an Environmental Science program with a minimum of two to three years’ related work experience.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must have a valid class 5 Driver’s License and a reliable mode of transportation
  • Must provide an updated drivers abstract.
